How we score home services providers

Same rule as everywhere else on this site: when you sign up with a provider through us, that provider pays us a referral fee. That fee is the same regardless of which provider you choose, so our score is based on price, contract terms, and actual service quality — not payout.

We check contract terms and cancellation policies specifically, since that's usually where home services providers bury the real cost. A provider with a hidden early-termination fee or a forced multi-year contract scores lower here, not hidden in fine print.

*Our score reflects Jonathan and Steve's own review of each provider — not a paid placement, and separate from any public review count.

Common questions

Do I need a contract for home internet? −
It depends on the provider. Many newer fiber and fixed-wireless providers, including AT&T, EarthLink Fiber, and Spectrum, offer no-contract plans. Traditional cable providers sometimes offer contract options in exchange for a lower promotional rate.
What's the difference between EarthLink Fiber, EarthLink 4G/5G Wireless, and EarthLink? −
These are three different connection types offered under the EarthLink brand. EarthLink Fiber is a wired fiber-optic connection where available. EarthLink 4G/5G Wireless uses cellular network technology to deliver home internet without a wired line. EarthLink's standard service typically refers to DSL or other legacy connection types in areas without fiber or wireless coverage.
Does Fortview Home Security require a contract? −
Fortview offers both contract and no-contract options depending on the equipment package and monitoring plan you choose — worth confirming current terms directly with Fortview before signing up.

Compare the bill you will actually pay

Home-service pricing often changes after a promotion. Compare the regular monthly price, equipment, installation, taxes, contract terms, data limits, and cancellation rules—not only the first-month headline.
